Industrial Agriculture

Industrial agriculture is great for farmers, and supermarkets that sell crops. The industialization of farming is simply put though. It does not make the food better for human, it could actually make it worse. I will go into more detail on that later, but the main advantage to industrializing is that it make growing crops and feeding animals much easier and much quicker. In the past there might even have been a year when there were no good crop, and only skiny cows and pigs, but no longer. With the Industrial revolution of farming people will see that growing lots of crops every year will become easy. Also cows and other livestock will become even easier to breed for feeding. Even though this version of farming has the ability to kick out large amounts of profits is it really better for your health?
The first reason is because of aminal rights activists. If people are able to have more animals, are they still probally able to have enough space for all of them. The answer is probally not, and that will raise many issues with activist.
Another reason that industrialized farming is not that good is because of all the fertilizers that are being put onto fruits and vegtable nowadays. Is rinsing your fruit enough to clear them all away. I highly dought it so with this new type of farming people could be ingesting all sorts of harmfull chemicals.
Those are just a few reasons why people should be carefull with industrialized farming.

  1. I had never thought of the animals and their living quarters before you mentioned it, Charlie. But you are probably right. Also, they probably are not living in good condition sanitation-wise. I read that they live surrounded by their manure, allowing E. Coli to breed and enter the cows' bodies. And some people don't even wash their fruits and vegetables. They do not realize the number of potentionally harmful chemicals and bacteria they just consumed. With the competition for you can produce more and the rush to make more money, our health has been jeopardized by the big industrial farmers.

  3. I think industrialized farming is great for producing more crops. However there are some negative aspects to it too. You were talking about fertilizers being put on fruit, also pesticides...I guess they're basically the same thing. If they are left on the fruit, vegetable, etc. and it is consumed, the chemicals would have a negative effect on your body and your health.

  4. Nice blog charlie. Farmin is a big issue today and affects a numerous number of people. If this problem is not dealt with soon it may get way out of hand. The info on the animal rights group was a new idea i had never considered before. But when you think about it you are right. Good work.

  5. Chas, you are definitely right when you say industrialized farming is good for farmers, with respect to profits and efficiency. On the other hand, the dangerous machinery, along with the environment farmers are exposed to, makes industrialized farming a very unsafe job. (I talked about that in my blog if anyone is interested...and yes, I am advertising for my blog...)

Another thing - I agree that rinsing your fruits is not enough to rinse the harmful chemicals from the surface. The amount of these chemicals on the foods we buy is probably insignificant, but I'm sure it all adds up eventually. Nice blorg Chas!

  6. The biggest problem is the fact that the only way a farm can be competitive in todays market is to industrialize and make itself the same as these mega-farms that are unhealthy for us. Thats whats economically viable today, and I can't see it becoming any better in the future.

  7. I really enjoyed reading this post and it was very interesting. I can definetely understand how the chemicals in fertilizers can be very harmful to us. Good job.

  8. Good job Char,
I completely agree with you about the chemicals that are being put into the foods nowdays. I hate to think of what I could be ingesting because of the way industrialized agriculture tries to produce large quantities of fruits and vegetables by using harmful chemical toxins. It seems that the fruit looks really good but doesn't taste as good since they are trying to grow as many as possible, so the quality is lost.

  9. Charlay! Compelling work...truly compelling. But really, nice job. I appreciated the fact that you covered the benefits of industrial farming before listing the negatives. Though we don't think about it much, chemicals are a big problem. We have no idea what we are ingesting when we eat an apple. This leads me to my lesson of the day...always rinse your fruits and veggies before you eat them or you will get sick and you will die. As Dmitri said, the farmers are producing so many fruits, so quickly, that they are not of good quality...at all. I bet the fruits and vegetables in The Garden of Eden were awesome. Aww, now I'm hungry.

  10. Good job Chuck! Like I commmented in Dmeach's blog earlier, focusing on quantity rather than quality can have dangerous affects on our health. It's unfortunate that people probably don't care enough to cause some kind of industrial farming reform and we'll probably just end up learning the hard way. Oh well, that's America for ya'! Whooooooooooo I'm proud of you Chucko!!!!! Don't ever change. Follow your dreams. Peace.
