Let's Make G.R.E.A.T. Decisions

In class we all learned about the G. R. E. A. T. Decision making process. Well obviously that is not the only one, there are many others like the PLUS system and the S. W. O. T. system. Obviously everyone already knows the G. R. E. A. T. process so i wont't go into detail, nut the PLUS system is made up of 6 steps, they are: Step 1: Define the problem PLUS Step 2: Identify alternatives Step 3: Evaluate the alternatives PLUS Step 4: Make the decision Step 5: Implement the decision Step 6: Evaluate the decision PLUS. The S. W. O. T. system is a slightly diffrent and shorter process. A person would need to look into the stregnths of what they decide, the weakness of their decision, the opputunities it would bring, and also the threats is shows. All three of these systems are very good for making decisions, but which of them is the best.
When you are about to use any of these systems the first step is always the same, it's basically universal. One needs to identify the problem before they can decide anything. Then when using the G. R. E. A. T. or PLUS system you need to basically fork through all the results. When using the S. W. O. T. system that is also the next step, but it is also the only step, the only thing i think that system lets you do is investigate consequences. The nice thing about using the first too approaches is that in the case that you made the wrong decision you will go back and review, this will hopefully help you learn a lesson, unlike the S. W. O. T. which only lets you decide. I think that the G. R. E. A. T. and PLUS are the better two systems to use, but its your choice.

  1. When I was searching for good decision making models, I noticed the PLUS and S.W.O.T. models came up. I agree with you that the GREAT decision making model is a good choice. It is easy to remember, takes you through everything step by step, and makes you reflect on the choice you made at the end. It is interesting to hear that the S.W.O.T. model has fewer steps than both the GREAT Decision making model and the PLUS model. All three systems seem to describe the pros and cons to making that decision. Both the PLUS system and the GREAT decision making model are very similar in the steps and what to do for each one. The only difference really is of the wording and the fact that the PLUS model has one more step than the GREAT model. Does S.W.O.T. stand for anything? What does the plus mean? Other than those questions, I learned about two more decision making models. Thanks, Charlie!

  2. i agree with erica and i think that any descision making model would help in some way. every descision making model is different but in a way they are all the same

  3. sorry if it was a little unclear SWOT isn't much of an acronym as GREAT is but yes it does stand for something. SWOT stands for Stregnths, Weakness, Oppurtunities and Threats. PLUS on the otherhand did not stand for anything. Good Question though!

  4. The GREAT model seems like its the best. This is the first time ive heard of the SWOT model and it seems like it could work. good info!!!

  5. Every one of these decision making processes seems like the same thing to me. I happen to like the SWOT process more than the GREAT process more, simply because it sounds cooler. I mean, the two things are basically the same, so why not pick the one with the cooler name?

When I found the PLUS model, I was very confused as to why they called it that. I wish they would've told us on the website, but I guess they randomly decided to give it some form of "positive" name.

    Good work Chuck.

  6. Like Erica said, Plus came up the most when I was searching for different decision making models. They all sounded good but so far I like GREAT the most.
